5.0 out of 5 stars Good, Inexpensive 3/4-Size Classical Guitar, December 17, 2009

I teach classical guitar and one of my daughters is now old enough (8 yrs. old for a larger instrument but a full-sized guitar is still too big. I took a chance on buying this guitar sight-unseen but I have pleasantly surprised. It only arrived yesterday, but since I teach guitar it doesn't take me a long time to assess the quality of an instrument. It's not perfect, but is acceptable.

It came well-packed - the guitar itself is wrapped in a soft plastic wrap, then boxed, and then that box is inside another box. I could find no damage due to shipping and it arrived about one week before Christmas. The finish on the guitar is shiny lacquer, the machine tuning pegs work well, the action seemed to be just right at the frets near the body of the guitar, the construction seems solid, but what surprised me the most after I tuned it up was the voice it had. For a little, brand-new, inexpensive guitar it had quite a nice loud voice. And hopefully it will only get better with... Read more

We purchased this guitar at the recommendation of our daughter's elementary school music teacher. He is teaching her how to play guitar and the Yamaha CGS103A 3/4 size is an excellent beginner instrument that she will be able to use for quite awhile as she grows. She is 8 years old and this guitar can easily take her through her teen years. Amazon.com had the best price, it shipped very quickly from Best Service Stores, and it arrived before the estimated date.

I bought this guitar for my daughter and so far it is proving to be the perfect guitar for her. The 3/4 size is just right for her hands and body size (9 years old) but will also grow with her for the next few years at least. The sound is very nice and impressed her guitar instructor. The guitar was shipped inside two separate boxes with adequate packing material and a foam sleeve, so needless to say, arrived in perfect shape.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great sound - Slightly poor worksmanship, Bad Case, April 10, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
This review is from: Yamaha Gigmaker Standard Acoustic Guitar Pack, Natural (Electronics)
I got this guitar to replace my Mitchell guitar based on reviews.
The price was good.
Also, it is the Yamaha brand name.
The sound, I was told by my teacher, was very good and he said it was a good buy.
The tuner is OK....better to buy a Korg tuner from Amazon.
Haven't tried the DVD yet.

I have only two complaints:
1) The bag, as pointed out by another review, is very flimsy. It has no straps, no padding. It just has a carry handle. You would want to buy another gig bag

2) The worksmanship is lacking at certain points....e.g. where the neck extends on to the body of the guitar, you see glue that was squeezed out from under. I am a stickler for aesthetics. Some people are not bothered with such stuff.

OVERALL A VERY GOOD GUITAR

PS - You might want to check out the GigMaker Deluxe...similar guitar but has a solid spruce top and is only $10-$20 extra. I did not know about it otherwise would have bought that... Read more

I'd never played guitar until I bought this one last month, so I can't compare this to others, but it's a great deal for the price. Yamaha quality and consistency are worth the few extra dollars you'll spend over cheap starter guitars.

If you're buying this as a gift for a beginner who has nothing, this is probably an awesome deal. If you're buying this for yourself, the extras may not be worth the extra money, unless you're a complete beginner who isn't sure if you'll stay with it, in which case the DVD alone is probably worth it.

Concerning the glue issue raised by another reviewer, mine did not have any unsightly extra glue squeezed out from where the neck extends onto the body. Sure, it's evident that glue was used, but only upon extremely up-close inspection.

I shopped around at music stores to price a good starter guitar. I was told about this product. After I went home I looked it up on line and the price was much less here through Amazon. I am very happy with the guitar so far.

I am very happy with this purchase. I've always wanted to learn the guitar but I didn't want to pay a lot of money for a beginner' guitar. I searched online for quite a while and came upon this guitar. I saw the price of it and all the additional items that came with it and thought to myself that since it's so "cheap" and I'm just learning to play, it would be a good deal to purchase it. I also thought that because is was so cheap, that the quality of the guitar would be poor. I'm happy to say that I was wrong. The quality of this "cheap" guitar is outstanding. I am so pleaed with it, plus all the items that came with it. I feel as though I "stoled" it. What a great product. I just love it. It looks and sounds wonderful. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants a good guitar, even those who play professionally.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great starter guitar, December 3, 2009

This review is from: Black Cutaway Acoustic Guitar with Accessories Combo Kit Beginners
All I really wanted was a starter guitar to test out and see if I liked the instrument. This product fit the bill very nicely, and was cheap enough to not be a major risk (around $40 including shipping). I could not be happier with my purchase. The guitar is as advertised, it's full-size (38"), and comes fully stringed and well packaged.

The tuner that comes with it is more like a kazoo than anything, but it actually does work once you get the hang of it (it's what you might call a manual tuner, I was expecting electronic). It's not a big deal though, the tuner DOES work after you understand how to use it, and even if you don't like it, there are plenty of free guitar tuners online.

The carrying case that it comes with is made of the cheaper plastic/cloth material low-end gym bags are made of, but it does it's job of keeping the guitar dust-free. The shoulder strap that comes with it is also someone cheaply made, but again does the job. It's a starter... Read more

I'm torn about reviewing this guitar. First off, there is nothing redeeming about the instrument. I immediately snapped the first string while simply tuning it. Once tuned, none of the strings vibrated cleanly in open position. They all had a "twang" to them. The sound was a little better when a fret was pressed; however, on the second string, the pitch remained the same until I pressed the fourth fret. The first three frets had absolutely no effect on the note. On the side of the guitar was a slight ding, which seriously affected the integrity of the structure. I had no doubt my ten-year-old could easily cave in the entire side of the guitar with the slightest pressure on that one spot.

Now then, to the company. This is why I am so conflicted. I could not have received better customer service. They immediately took my concerns to heart, asked if I wanted a replacement or refund, and quickly and painlessly refunded my money on request. They didn't even ask me to return the... Read more
